Teenager dies a day after being stabbed

Ex-BCL man held

Jahidul Islam
A 15-year-old boy, who was brutally knifed by masked criminals in Ishwarganj upazila on Tuesday, died yesterday.

A former Chattra League man was arrested yesterday in connection with the murder of the SSC examinee.

Md Jahidul Isla of the upazila’s Dauttapara area died of his stab wounds at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital. He was a student of Protisruti Model High School.

Around 9:45am on Tuesday, when Jahidul was on his way to Ideal College to sit for an exam, a group of masked criminals ambushed his rickshaw, said Ahmed Kabir Hossain, officer-in-charge of Ishwarganj police station, quoting locals.

Sensing trouble, Jahidul got off the rickshaw and began to run, but the attackers caught him and one of them stabbed him in the throat, leaving him critically injured, said the OC.

The criminals did not stop there and instead proceeded to beat Jahidul with sticks, the OC added.

After the attackers fled the scene, locals took Jahidul to Ishwarganj Upazila Health Complex, but he was later shifted to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital. He was referred to DMCH in the evening, where he passed away early in the morning. His body was sent to the hospital’s morgue for autopsy.

Quoting the victim’s family members and locals, the OC said there had been a fight between Jahidul and one of his classmates over a football match recently.

During the fight, Jahidul allegedly slapped his classmate, said the OC.

“We are trying to find the cause of the murder and are pursuing different threads,” said the OC.

The victim’s mother Noor Jahan lodged a case with the police station accusing 11 people, including the ex-joint secretary of Bangladesh Chhatra League’s Ishwarganj Degree College unit Moshiur Rahman Kanchan as the prime accused, the OC said.

Police arrested Kanchan soon after and he was produced before a Mymensingh court this afternoon with a five-day remand prayer, he added.  Drives are on to arrest the others accused, the OC added. Additional Police Superintendent (Crime) SA Newazi visited the spot.
