The government will ensure justice for Nusrat Jahan Rafi, a madrasa student who was burnt in reprisal after bringing charges of sexual abuse against the principal in Feni, the education minister has said.
Dipu Moni visited the 18-year-old girl at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Sunday night.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said she will pay for the expenses of Nusrat’s treatment, Dipu Moni told her family members, the ministry said in a media release.
“No culprit will be spared. But the victim’s treatment is the most important thing now. She is in critical condition. The government has taken this unfortunate incident seriously,” the release quoted Dipu Moni as saying.
“The people responsible for the act will be tried after proper investigation,” she told the media after the visit.
Some masked women there asked her to withdraw a case against Principal Siraj-ud-Daula, who had already been in jail on charges of sexually abusing her on Mar 27, Nusrat told the media.
They poured kerosene on her body and set her on fire when she refused to oblige them, she said.
Police and others at the institution rescued her and rushed her to a local hospital. She was later transferred to the DMCH.
Police have detained a teacher and a student of the madrasa for questioning.
PRINCIPAL SUSPENDED
The madrasa suspended Siraj and decided to postpone educational activities until the end of the Alim exams on Apr 16 in a meeting of its governing body on Sunday.
A committee of three has been formed to investigate the incident, Additional District Magistrate PKM Enamul Karim, who also heads the madrasa’s governing body, told bdnews24.com.
Suspended principal Siraj is a former leader of the Jamaat-e-Islami, according to the party’s Feni district unit chief AKM Shamsuddin.
The party expelled him over different allegations in 2016, he claimed.
Siraj, accused in three other cases of sabotage and attack on police, was out on bail, Shamsuddin added.
